The picturesque beauty of the steep vineyards in southern Styria and the complexity of the wines they yield have fascinated us from the very beginning. A winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times, fertile soils, the perfect microclimate, and gently rolling hills — all of it creates the ideal terroir for our vision of wine: to craft the best, in harmony with nature and its diversity, guided by passion, skill, and care.

The Vineyards

Sernauberg gave our estate its name — but it is far more than a namesake. It is the protagonist: shaped millions of years ago, when a tropical sea covered what is now the Gamlitz basin. Today, vines grow here that still carry traces of that ancient past — forming the foundation for wines that not only delight, but resonate. Mineral-driven. Complex. Distinctive.

Our vineyards are much more than just the origin of our wines — they are vibrant, living places full of diversity. To preserve this uniqueness, we rely on certified organic farming. Without chemical interventions such as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, the natural cycle remains intact, allowing the vines to thrive in harmony with nature. Between the vines, a variety of herbs grow, creating together with the vines a habitat for countless living creatures. This microcosm strengthens the vineyards and the soil, fostering a healthy balance that is directly reflected in the quality of the grapes.

Our vineyards are deeply rooted in the “Steirischer Schlier,” a unique soil layer dating back to the middle Miocene. This mineral-rich clay marl, interspersed with quartz sand and basal conglomerates, provides ideal conditions for viticulture. The “Steirischer Schlier” ensures that our vines have access to essential nutrients and optimal water retention — perfect for cultivating wines of exceptional depth and elegance.
